The Old Courts and Yards of Norwich: A Story of People, Poverty and Pride: At the turn of the 20th century more than 10% of Norwich’s population lived in the old courts and yards. Using a combination of archive material and recorded interviews Frances and Michael Holmes will tell the fascinating history of the old yards. An account which is about more than bricks and mortar, it is also the story of the communities and individuals who called them home.
Frances and Michael fell into writing and publishing books by accident. Both are interested in the history of Norwich and after retiring from ‘paid work’ in 2006 they embarked on a series of projects with a simple aim of encouraging an appreciation of the heritage of a wonderful city. They have since written and published books about the City covering a range of topics, including trams, Norwich in the 1950s, the old courts and yards and the City’s shoe trade. In all cases they merge facts, photographs, memories, contemporary reports and articles, to bring a story alive, and to produce books which are both entertaining and factual.
