The 2023 exhibition in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam showcasing 28 of Vermeer's 37 known paintings has shown us there is more to Vermeer than his tranquil, peaceful, still and meditative genre paintings.
Experimental brushstrokes, quickly painted in a wide range of topics, loved and collected by women. In this lecture by Dutch art historian Mariska Beekenkamp-Wladimiroff will introduce Vermeer the person, the city in which he lived, the range of topics he covered, his beliefs, his patrons and his legacy.
All Arts Society Wensum members are welcome to attend this event without booking.
Arts Society Wensum normally holds nine monthly lectures (September-November; January- June) and a Christmas lecture. The lectures are held at the Assembly House in the centre of Norwich.
It also arranges Special Interest Days and day visits to places of interest. Each autumn it organises a 3-4 day visit to another UK destination.
The society has room for a few additional members. If you are interested please contact the Membership Secretary: taswensum.membership@gmail.com
Mariska Beekenkamp-Wladimiroff is a social psychologist by trade and finished her MA at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, in Dutch Baroque Art. Soon after this she was lucky enough to lecture for the most wonderful group of students. She decided this was what she wanted to do, and set up Art Historical London offering art historical lectures, courses, tours, travel and events from London. Over the years this has expanded to events in New York and Amsterdam, and since March 2020 online.
Fully accredited PTLLS lecturer she also teaches on the public program of the Dulwich Picture Gallery, and can provide live, online and recorded lectures for groups or individuals.
