M.R James Evening of Ghost Stories by Candlelight

Something wicked this way comes…As the haunting season begins, The Assembly House will be presenting an eerie evening of ghost stories written by the master of the macabre, M.R James and read by the wonderful Robert Lloyd Parry.

An intimate theatre production in the atmospheric Music Room, performed by candlelight, Mr Lloyd Parry will be performing the classic A Warning to the Curious, set in Seaburgh in Suffolk (a thinly-veiled disguise for the seaside town of Aldeburgh) and Lost Hearts, a chilling tale of ghostly children and dark magic.

The stories will be read by flickering candlelight in a darkened room and guests will be welcomed to the House with a glass of Victorian punch (non-alcoholic punch available) and a spiced shortbread soul cake, traditionally made to commemorate the dead.

Tickets cost £22.50 per person, call 01603 626402 to avoid the booking fee.

M.R James (1862 – 1936) wrote many of his best tales to read aloud to friends by candlelight in his office at King’s College, Cambridge in the early 20th century and since early in the 21st, Robert Lloyd Parry of Nunkie Theatre Company has been keeping the flame lit with his eerie one-man show.

Lost Hearts was among the first stories the author wrote and it offers one of his most memorable villains, the predatory scholar Mr Abney. It is paired here with perhaps James’s most poignant and personal work: A Warning to the Curious, in which a young archaeologist is haunted and hunted by the guardian of an ancient treasure.

Performer Robert Lloyd Parry has been touring several shows based on the works of M R James round the country for a decade and he appeared as the author in Mark Gatiss’s acclaimed BBC Documentary: “M.R James: Ghost Writer.”

This performance is not suitable for children under the age of 12.

“Remarkable. Lloyd Parry is a natural storyteller, well able to hold, amuse and frighten his audience.” - The Stage
