Alfred Hitchcock’s The Lodger (PG)
Plus Live Piano accompaniment
Tuesday 12th November at 7:15pm
The Norwich Film Festival is delighted to host one of Alfred Hitchcock’s masterpieces… Set in pre-first world war London the city is being terrorised by a Jack the Ripper-style murderer, ‘The Avenger’, who targets young fair-haired women. A mysterious new lodger (Ivor Novello) arrives at the anonymous boarding house of Mr and Mrs Bunting, and begins to entrance the landlady’s pretty daughter Daisy (June Tripp) – who is being courted by a Scotland Yard detective on the killer’s trail. When the lodger begins behaving strangely, he attracts suspicion. With his mysterious night time excursions, might he not be the killer himself?
Featuring Hitchcock’s first director cameo (as a telephone operator), The Lodger is key to understanding the director’s origins. This film is gruesome yet elegant, urbane yet distinctly Gothic, The Lodger is one of the ultimate Hitchcock films—not to be missed on the big screen!
We are also delighted to include that this silent film screening will feature a live piano accompaniment by leading silent film accompanist and resident BFI Piano Player Stephen Horne.
